The Misgivings (Part 1)
3rd of Kuthona - 4th of Kuthona, 4707 AR

Moonday, 3rd of Kuthona, 4707 AR
Back in town, the group splits to do their own things. Mack heads to Father Zantus looking for treatment of his wound. Father Zantus confirms that Mack has ghoul fever, but then he looks strong enough to fight it off. Even so, Father Zantus helps to booth Mack’s fortitude in order to fight off the fever.

Jade and fake-Abas head to Sheriff Hemlock to fill him in on the situation encounter at the Hambley farm. It also turns out that the guards returned safely, though one was infected with ghoul fever. He is currently being taken care of by Father Zantus. Jade and fake-Abas ask for help treating Mack, and unfortunately the Sheriff can only spare 250 gp (50 gp to each current member of the Defenders).

Fake-Abas cooks up a plan to steal a potion of Remove Disease in the market, and succeeds in getting the potion without being caught. Mack assisted him by throwing 100 silver pieces into the air, pulling attention towards him. This provided a distration that allowed fake-Abas to steal a potion and leave. None of the other Defenders know about this theft.

Blackfang spends much of his day researching the Misgivings in hopes of preparing for the upcoming trip to the Manor. He learns everything there is to learn in town.

Foxglove Manor is over 80 years old, and has been the seat of the Foxglove family the whole time. Some sort of tragedy struck the family a few decades ago, and no one’s lived there since. Common rumor holds that the place is Haunted.

The Manor is known as the “Misgivings” by some locals, particularly by Varisians. It certainly has a bad reputation – sightings of strange lights in the attic windows, muffled sounds of screaming from above and below, and even rumors of a huge bat-winged devil living in the caves below the manor are but a few of the tales told about the place. The Foxglove family lived there as recently as 2 decades ago, but then a fire burned down the servants’ building, Cyralie Foxglove was found dead – burnt and dashed on the rocks below the cliffs behind the house – and Traver Foxglove was found in his bedroom, dead by his own hand. The children, including young Aldern Foxglove, were sent away to be raised in Korvosa by distant relations.

Aldern Foxglove recently returned to live in the manor, but he had a hell of a time hiring locals to aid him in the reconstruction and repair of the old building. Until Aldern moved back in, the place was cared for by a man named Rogors Craesby (a retired innkeeper who lost an ear in a bar fight many years ago) who came in 3 days a week from Sandpoint to air the place out, check for squatters, and make minor repairs. As it turns out, this is the same Rogors that was encountered as a ghast at the Hambley farmstead.

Foxglove Manor was built decades ago by Vorel Foxglove, a merchant prince from Magnimar. He and his family lived there for 20 years before the entire family perished from disease. The surviving Foxgloves of Magnimar shunned the place for 40 years, until Traver Foxglove moved back in.

The Foxgloves have traditionally been associated with the Brothers of the Seven, a secretive gentlemen’s club based in Magnimar and consisting of merchants or thieves, depending on whom you talk to. Members of the society periodically visited Foxglove Manor at night during the years the manor went unlived-in, perhaps to check up on the building and make minor repairs – or perhaps for more sinister pursuits.

Later in the evening, fake-Abas and Jade flirt with the ladies. Fake-Abas has luck with one woman, and even invites her to his room at the inn, but much to his dismay, she invites him to the Pixie’s Kitten instead, the local town brothel. Jade on the other hand has luck with all the ladies. Although he has the chance to bed any one of them, he makes the choice to go to bed alone.

Down at the Hagfish, Mack gets to gambling. He does so well that some patrons become suspicious but they don’t catch any of his sleight of hand moves with the cards. He walks away with over 100 gold at the end of the night.

Toilday, 4th of Kuthona, 4707 AR
Mack awakes to find his fever has broken and he is no longer infected with ghoul fever. The group fetches some needed items, and then they head out on their journey to the Misgivings.

Very few travellers are encountered on the Lost Coast Road, and when the group arrives at the bridge crossing Foxglove River, they turn off onto the narrow path that no one travels on. On the way, they encounter a pair of boars and a few dire rats, all of which prove to be no match for their strength. It is roughly mid-day when they arrive at the Misgivings, but it is difficult to tell as clouds overcast the sky and rain begins to fall. The Manor looms on the edge of the cliffs, looking out over a beautiful view. The building appears to be falling apart.

On the way to the front of the Manor, the group passes the burnt down remains of the old Servants’ Quarters. After looking around trying to look through windows, fake-Abas attempts to pick the lock at the front door, while Mack breaks a window on the side of the house. Jade and Blackfang wait at the front door while fake-Abas works away at the tough lock.

Mack enters the broken window to find himself in a library. No one else is in the room, but he finds blood on a chair and a broken angel statue bookend. A scarf lays on a chair, the only bright color in this otherwise drab room. Entering into the next room, Mack sees the mouldy curtains flutter out of the corner of his eye. When he opens them, he sees a sad-looking woman reflected in the window. She vanishes an instant later.

Back at the main entrance, the rest of the group manages to get through and end up meeting Mack in the Entrance Hall as he comes through another door. Mack catches a momentary whiff of burning hair and flesh, but nothing happens. The room is decorated with hunting trophies; the most impressive is a Manticore in the center of the room.

A weird shriveled monkey head thing hangs past the entrance hall, and when the rope attached to it is pulled, it shrieks out. Jade states that if there are people or creatures here before and they didn’t know the group was there, well they do now.

In the next room, the group finds some beautiful stained glass windows depicting monsters rising out of seven-sided boxes. That is at first look. It is realized by Blackfang that these creatures are being sucked into the boxes. Mack mentions that it is unusual that these windows were placed here when the view behind them of the waters is far more beautiful.

Heading into the next room, the group finds a lounge of sorts covered in dust… dust which seems to be kicked up in front of the fireplace as if someone were talking through it. A woman’s voice is heard whispering Lorey, and Blackfang approaches to examine the area. He is overcome by flashes of memories – a woman’s memories of worrying about what her husband might be doing late at night in the basement. Blackfang has a momentary urge to start dragging Mack out of the house, thinking that he is his child and that they must get to safety. Luckily he snaps out of it.

Heading back to the entrance hall, the group sees the stuffed smoldering as if it is going to catch fire. Mack attempts to shoot the beast, and blows a hole in its wing, but it does not stop what happens next. The manticore lurches to live, bursts into flame, and swings its tail around at Mack. Though he manages to not catch flame, the attack does a good amount of damage to Mack. After the attack, the manticore returns back to normal as if nothing had happened. Mack recalls that this might be what is known as a haunt and that it shouldn’t happen again for at least a day.

Jade wants to head up the stairs to investigate the next floor, but Blackfang convinces the group to finish looking around this floor before leaving it. Heading into another room, the group discovers a dancing parlor with a decaying piano. Even after the manticore incident moments before, Blackfang goes to the piano and presses a key, a note that is perfectly in tune. Music suddenly explodes from the piano and Blackfang is swept up by a woman that only he can see. He begins dancing around the room, feeling a bit of his dead wife in this partner. Mack begins playing the air-mandolin and fake-Abas attempts to stop Blackfang from dancing. Jade opens another door to find a lone rat in a bathtub. The tiny creature doesn’t even have time to try and climb out before one of Jade’s arrows kills it.

After a short amount of time, Blackfang sees the woman change, darkening and dying. When the music stops, his strength is gone and he is fatigued. Worse still, his mood as completely darkened and he steps outside, ignoring the rest of the group.

Meanwhile, Jade, Mack, and fake-Abas head upstairs to the second floor. In one room, five more stained-glass windows are found, each with the following images: a large pale and ghostly scorpion, a gaunt man holding out his arms as a dozen bats hang from him, a moth with a strange skull-like pattern on its wings, a tangle of dull green plants with bell-shaped flowers, and a young maiden sitting astride a well in a forest while a spindly spider the size of a dog descends along a string of webbing above her. Mack is unnerved by the third window with the skull-winged moth, so he shoots the window out.

Jade opens a door to another door leading to a room caked in mould. He hears a child’s voice say “What’s on your face, Mommy?” and he quickly retreats from the room.

A master bedroom is discovered through another door, although the room has been destroyed. The only thing not destroyed is a painting that has been turned around to face the wall. The group ignores it and retreats to a door close by. Inside they find stairs leading up, but befre they can follow them, a humanoid fox creature comes down the hallway mumbling angrily. He approaches Mack, looking as if he is going to attack, and Mack raises his gun to shoot.

Who is this fox creature? What else will the group encounter in the Misgivings?

Walking Scarecrows
30th of Neth - 2nd of Kuthona, 4707 AR

Fireday, 30th of Neth, 4707 AR
The necromancer wizard is left alone for the moment, and the group talks to Erin Habe about what he is doing with his patients. As it turns out, he was studying the crazed man who was sick with ghoul fever. With the tools found on the third floor, it was assumed that he was doing more than just studying. The group chastised the man for not doing what was best for the patient; he could have brought him to town to try and cure him.

After some debating between the group on what to do with Erin, they decided it was best to leave him at the Sanatorium (there were still patients in the building after all) and report to the Sheriff about what the man was doing. Erin attempted to persuade them not to report it, he swore he would stop, but the group thought it was best that someone keep an eye on the man.

The wizard’s basement lair was examined for clues and it was determined that he was not the murderer they sought. In fact, he provided clues to the actual murderer. Jade found a neat looking ring and decided to put it on (and proceeded to age rapidly while wearing it, and even after removing it).

Heading back to Sandpoint, the group encounters the necromancer and a few more zombies. Abas, still blinded, choose to stay back at first, but upon realizing there was still a chance he could help, he jumped right into the fight and managed to land a few blows. Blackfang attempted to stop the necromancer by talking to him, and even stood in the way of Mack’s line of fire, but to no avail. The necromancer would not surrender and he and his zombies were taken down.

Starday, 1st of Kuthona, 4707 AR
Back in town, the group decides to spend a little time off in town. Items are sold, Abas was cure of his blindness, and Jade found a way to remove the aging curse the ring gave him. Unfortunately (for Abas mostly), they were unable to stay in town long. The Sheriff called for the Defenders of the Lost Coast after a man, Farmer Grump, ran into town, mumbling about living scarecrows attacking the farmers.

Though possible that his story was enhanced by alcohol, the Sheriff asks the group to investigate one of the Southern farms owned by the Hambley family. The group sets out to investigate with four of the town guard to help along the way.

Sunday, 2nd of Kuthona, 4707 AR
The group comes upon the Hambley farm late in the evening and decides to camp away from it for the night before continuing on in the morning. Inside the maze of corn stalks, they come across unusual scarecrows… these scarecrows are actually farmers and their families who have been infected with ghoul fever and have been strung up to wait their transformation into an undead ghoul.

They even find living people strung up, close to death, but not yet transformed. Ignoring their own conversation with Erin Habe two days ago about the infected patient, the group murders the infected humans, believing that they are too far gone to help.

At the farmhouse, they find a couple ghouls and a stronger ghast called Rogors inside the house. All though Abas is unlucky again and becomes paralyzed for a few minutes, the group manages to defeat the undead creatues (as well as those found in the barn).

Sadly, they find a murdered man in the house, just like at the murder victim in town at the Mill. This man is not identified by the group, though it is safe to assume that it is the master of the farmlands, Farmer Hambley. The man’s life savings is found in the bedroom (and taken for the group) and a key is found on the ghast, hanging around his neck. A symbol on the key solidifies the groups idea of going to the Misgivings/Foxglove Manor next after a short rest in town.

Twenty-one ghouls and one ghast were defeated on this farm. How many more are out there? What will the group find at Foxglove Manor? Is Aldern Foxglove involved in the recent happenings? Why are some bodies being found dead with the Sihedron Ruin carved into them? And how is Jade involved in all of these happenings?

Habe's Sanatorium
30th of Neth, 4707 AR

Fireday, 30th of Neth, 4707 AR AR
The Defenders of the Lost Coast wake in the morning and continue on to Habe’s Sanatorium. Upon arrival, they quickly discover a bell in a waiting room that summons Erin Habe, the man who runs The Saintly Haven of Respite. Erin answer’s the door, clearly unhappy to have visitors. When the group requests to speak with one of the patients, Erin rudely tells them to come back at another time because he is busy right now.

Some discussion, and the group remembering they have a letter from the Sheriff, convinces the man to let the group in. He sends an orderly, a lanky man who also happened to have horns and a tail, to go fetch Grayst Sevilla. Jade attempts to follow the orderly, but is asked to remain on the ground floor.

After some small talk with Erin, the orderly returned with Grayst, who had little to say apart from incoherent mumblings about "razors " and “too many teeth” and how “the Skinsaw Man is coming.” When the crazed, ill man finally looked up at the group and saw Jade, his eyes went wide and he began speaking about a message that he had for him from His Lordship.

“The master said that the bodies you are finding are signs and warning, that when he is done, you shall be remembered forever and the Misgivings shall be your throne!” (Abas shared a bit later that the Misgivings is the local name for a rundown and abandoned estate further south – a place called Foxglove Manor.)

Before anyone could really react to this message, the man collapsed. He began rising and shrieking, ripping his arms free from his straightjacket. He lunged right for Jade, intending to kill the one whom his “master” loves more than him. The orderly takes Erin and they run upstairs while the group works to stop Grayst from attacking Jade. They choose to end his life, rather than capture him and return him to his cell.

While most of the group brings the body outside to burn, should he turn into a ghoul and rise again, Blackfang decided to head upstairs, turn invisible and into a smaller creature, and lure a second orderly into opening a locked door by impersonating Erin. The man was clearly confused since Erin and his brother had run by him not too long ago, but he opened the door anyways and found nothing.

Some of the other party members began to ascend the stairs and convinced the man to open the door again, but Blackfang was also attempting to locate Grayst’s cell by opening the little window to a cell, making noise that alerted the orderly of the presence of something. The rest of the group looked on as the orderly began to attack the air.

Padfoot detected evil on the orderly at this time as well and shouted “Kill him, he is evil!” Shockingly, some of the party members began to attack him solely on the fact that Padfoot claimed he was evil.

During the fight, Blackfang managed to fly up into the now-open window of the cell he was looking in before. The patient inside began to panic at something touching him. The first orderly, upon hearing the commotion, descended from the top floor and found his brother dead. Though he tried to avenge his brother, his life was also forfeited.

On the third floor, the group encounters a patient that they have a pleasant conversation with. The group learns from him that Erin is up to no good and that there is another man that he works with. The two were experimenting on Grayst.

Erin is found hiding in a corner in a room on this floor, and after some accusations from some of the party, he managed to bolt under some tables and into a secret door. The door led to a closet in the hall, and Erin was seen fleeing down the hall and stairs.

The group gave chase, though Abas was quick to follow, he was stopped by Pidgit, the wererat they spoke to in the cell earlier. Erin had let him out before running down the stairs. The wererat tries to steal Abas’s weapon from him, managing to succeed. He stairs at the weapon, fascinated, even though Abas is using deadly force on him to get his weapon back. He kills the creature, and descends after his group.

Erin is hiding in his bedroom with the group outside the door attempting to open it when zombies are seen coming up the basement stairs. With them is a man who is clearly using necromancy to control the zombies. An intense battle begins, and though the group defeats the zombies, the wizard gets away. But not before blinding Abas.

Murder Most Foul
29th of Neth, 4707 AR

*_*Oathday, 29th of Neth, 4707 AR*_*
After two months of hanging out in Sandpoint, the Defenders of the Lost Coast and new adventurers are invited to meet with Sheriff Hemlock at the Sandpoint Garrison. The man is grimfaced and sullen, with good reason. A murderer is running around the Sandpoint area, and he needs help to solve the case. He and his guards need to keep the town peace in order to prevent the townsfolk from panicking like when Chopper went on his murder spree five years ago. He asks the group of adventurers to help him by following some leads. He hopes the group can track down the murderer without raising any panic in town.

To make matters worse, a note to Jade was left on the most recent victim; “I do as you command, master” signed Your Lordship. The Sheriff assures him that he is not a suspect, but if word of this were to get out in town, it could be very bad.

The Leads

  1. Ibor Thorn – found bodies; in a holding cell
  2. Ven Vinder – flew into rage when informed of daughter’s death; holding cell
  3. The First Murders – three men; bodies in basement near holding cells
  4. Sandpoint Lumber Mill – latest murders here
  5. The Rune – carved into bodies; consult an expert?

Nothing new is learned from Ibor Thorn at first. He went to work at the Sandpoint Mill where he found his partner, Harker, dead and ripped to pieces. Harker’s girlfriend, Katrine, lay dead on the other end of the building. The group manages to convince him to talk more; Harker was a greedy man who was skimming off the top of sales. The Scarnetti family, who owns the Mill, would not be happy to learn of this. Ibor wouldn’t be surprised if they hired someone to kill him.

Nothing is learned from Ven Vinder. The man seemed to be calmed down from the rage he flew into when he found out about his daughter’s murder, but every question the group asked him seemed to bring the rage right back to the surface.

Next the bodies of the first murder victims are examined. The group learned that a patrol of guards was attacked by a crazed man near an abandoned bar outside town. He was subdued and eventually brought to Habe’s Sanatorium south of town. When the guards checked out the barn, however, they found the bodies of three con men. The bodies lay in the Garrison, covered in claw marks. The Sheriff is willing to give a letter of introduction to go see the crazed man at Habe’s.

At the Mill, footprints were found across the river, in the mud near the pier, and along the pier leading into the Mill. Inside, the bodies Harker and Katrine lay inside left as they were found. A struggle occurred between the killer and Harker, and a particular scent of rotten meat was discovered in the area of struggle and on the body. Harker’s body has been desecrated, ripped to pieces, and a seven-pointed star has been carved into his chest. Claw marks similar to the first victims are found on his body too.

Katrine’s body lays on the south end of the building, and it appears as if she fell or was pushed into the log splitter while it was still running. An axe lays nearby with smears of rotten flesh and bones, the stench overwhelming. Katrine seems to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time, but managed to hit the killer with the axe before her gruesome end.

A visit to Brodert Quink, the local authority on Varisian history, reveals some interesting news regarding the seven-pointed star symbol that has been repeatedly discovered by the Defender’s of Sandpoint. As it turns out, Varisia used to be home of Thassilan, an ancient empire from 10,000 years ago. This vast empire was ruled by powerful wizards; the sheer size of monuments left behind are a testimant to their power. Brodert even believes that the Old Light was once a war machine capable of spewing fire from its peak.

The seven-pointed star is a symbol of Thassilon called the Sihedron Rune. It is believed that it signifies the seven virtues of rule (wealth, fertility, honest pride, abundance, eager striving, righteous anger, and rest), but also the seven schools of magic recognized by Thassilon (there are eight now; divination magic was not held in high regard in the past). Brodert believes that its leaders were far from virtuous though, and that the classic mortal sins (greed, lust, pride, gluttony, envy, wrath, and sloth) rose from corruptions of the Thassilonian virtues of rule. The Sihedron Rune was a symbol of power and may have stood for and symbolized the empire itself.

The group decides that the next step is to go see the crazed man at Habe’s Sanatorium. Wasting no time, the group sets out on the journey to the Sanatorium where they encounter a small tribe of goblins and a will-o-wisp, both of which were defeated. The group comes upon the Sanatorium and the end of the day. Will the crazed patient give them any clues as to who the murder is? Will Jade recover his possessions that seem to be going missing? Find out next session of Rise of the Runelords.

Thistletop (part 2)
2nd of Lamashan - 3rd of Lamashan, 4707 AR

Toilday, 2nd of Lamashan, 4707 AR
After resting for a night in the throne room, the group awakens to find the Shalelu is missing after taking the third watch of the evening. Heading down to the second level of Thistletop, they begin to search for their missing companion.

Down one of the hallways, they see a nearly burnt out torch float towards them before is falls to the ground noisily. After a minute debate on the possibility of it being a ghost, the torch is examined and the world “help” is discovered on its base. Walking past Edd’s body, the group heads towards where the torch appears to have come from and they find a prison. A lone prisoner is found here (Lord Blackfang), is rescued, and he officially joins the group for the remainder of the dungeon.

The group and their new companion continue searching the dungeon looking for more goblins and for Shalelu. Those of you reading this should be happy that you have found this little note and if you send me a note saying “You are a sexy beast”. Instead of finding Shalelu, or even goblins really, they encounter a tentamort that they quickly kill, a goblin nursery where they’re attacked by some young goblins and where they decide to rescue a baby goblin, a chapel dedicated to Lamashtu where they encounter two yeth hounds, evil outsider creatures that they kill, and two humans named Orik and Lyrie.

Orik does some significant damage to the group before being convinced to surrender and leave with his life. The newest companion leads him out, then makes himself appear like Orik. He scouts out the spellcaster Lyrie and the next level of Thistletop before returning to the group with a plan. He convinces them that he can find a way to distract Lyrie and they can attack her. He disappears and when the group starts to attack Lyrie, they find Orik, alive and well and wearing the armor and weapons that were confiscated from him. Orik retreats into a secret door and turns back into Lord Blackfang. After the rest of the group kills Lyrie, they find Blackfang and ask where Orik went. Orik is never really thought of again by the group, even though they continue on to clear the 3rd level of Thistletop.

Vincent at this point decides to lead the party down a hall and before anyone can stop him or looks for traps, he finds himself trapped between two portcullises. While the others try to get him out, the statues north and south of Vincent begin to slash at him. After a near death experience in the trap, the group manages to pool their strength together to open the portcullis and rescue Vincent. Throughout all of this, Nualia is made aware of their presence and begins preparing herself for battle. She proves a bit of a challenge but her and a 3rd yeth hound are killed. In here, the group discovers papers and journals that reveal Nualia’s story, but they decide to read these later on (see Journals of Nualia, a separate post)

Blackfang’s keen perception allows him to find two coin slots on the walls beside a golden statue of spiky coins; for no apparent reason, he decides to place two of his own gold pieces into each of the slots and the statue lowers into the floor revealing more of the level that appears to have been untouched by Nualia and the goblins. They find a room with scary-looking tools, a seven-pointed star that turns out to be a key to the door south of them, and a skeleton that appears to have been from a humanoid with a smaller humanoid growing out of its back. Dargen seems particularly unnerved by the skeleton, believing it to be cursed.

While Dargen remains watching the skeleton and separating its pieces, the rest of the group opens a door to a room with a fire pit in the middle of it. Abas explores first and is attacked by an invisible creature. The group tries to kill the creature, but it proves to be a huge challenge at first. The group retreats and locks the creature in the room to heal.

The room to the north is opened where a ghostly figure is seen, speaking to an audience, repeating the same words over and over in an unknown language. The figure ignores them as if it were an image and not an actual person or ghost.

Continuing to explore, the group find a crypt of sorts, and are attacked by shadow creatures that weaken the party if they are touched. Non-magical attacks seem to have no effect on them, but they are killed with the help of Jade cheering the party on in a manner that lightens the mood and boosting morale. The group then decides to rest for a night in the crypt, instead of returning to the floor above and using the chambers they found earlier with comfy beds.

Wealday, 3rd of Lamashan, 4707 AR
The group awakens after an uneventful night, and they return to the creature that nearly bested them before in combat. Feeling more confident in their abilities, they are able to rid the world of the beast. Returning to the crypt where a secret door was found the night before, the group follows a corridor to find a pool or water with treasures in it. If you’re still reading this, message me this instead: “You’re a sexy beast, just like Nualia.” A golden helm rises out of the water and the group is attacked by a giant hermit crab that manages to grab Padfoot. After a bit of a struggle, he manages to escape. With some fancy acrobatics and some lucky hits from the group, the crab is killed and the treasure is gathered. The group returns to the surface after a thorough search of the building. Treasure in hand and a beautiful horse in tow, the group rigs the bridge to allow more weight to cross and they enter into the thistles. Here they find a bloodied Quinn who appears dead, a barely conscious Shalelu, and 10 dead goblins. It is easy to deduce that Quinn found Shalelu, and the two managed to kill all the goblins. The group loots Quinn’s body and carries Shalelu back to Abas’s cart in the forest.

Meeting with the Sheriff

Upon returning to town and informing the Sheriff of the outcome of exploring Thistletop (including Nualia’s involvement), the Sheriff greats you warmly and thanks you for your service to the town.

“All of Sandpoint has you to thank for your services, and a large part of the Lost Coast is thankful as well. The locals have begun referring to your group of adventures as the Defenders of the Lost Coast actually.” He laughs before continuing. “This got me thinking that perhaps I should make this an unofficial paid group for Sandpoint. We’ve had Shalelu helping for a while, and she has been wonderful, but she is just one person. Perhaps if we had more adventures around to quell the goblins and subdue any other issues that my town guard is unable to handle, the town will be much safer in the long run.”

He opens a drawer in his desk and retrieves a bundle of small cloth bags and hands one to each of you. “This here is a token of my appreciation for your help recently. It is only 250 gold for each of you, but you deserve so much more. Without you, we would have had many dead at the hands of the goblins and Nualia. It’s a shame that she was involved in all of this; we all thought she died in the Sandpoint fire 5 years ago. And Tsuto too…” He looks off, lost in thought for a moment. “Well, it is over now.” He smiles at the group. “Ameiko has informed me that she intends to allow anyone considered a member of the Defenders of the Lost Coast to stay at and dine in the Rusty Dragon Inn for free. Many of the local businesses are offering discounts as well in thanks to your service.” He hands you a list of notes he has collected from locals while you were at Thistletop.

  • Father Zantus is offering free healing services (though he is limited in his abilities)
  • Maver Kesk, the town Jeweler, is offering to pay 70% of the value for all gems and jewellery you wish to sell (usually he pays a maximum of 50%!)
  • Savah from the Armory is continuing to offer a discount, raising it to 30% off everything she has
  • Nisk Tander of Bottled Solutions is offering 50% off his potions (this is amazing, though he fancies himself more gifted than he really is and his potions may not always do what you expect)
  • The Pillbug Pantry is offering 10% off on all potions and medicines (Nisk offers similar items, but Aliver is more proficient in his trade)
  • Sabyl Sorn of the House of Blue Stones will likely open her extensive library to you if you can show you have good intentions
  • Chask Haladan of the Curious Goblin is willing to let go of his books with a 10% discount, but most of his wares are too pricy so it might be better to ask to read the books on site
  • Cyrdak invites you to all his future shows at the theatre… at full price of course (I suppose this isn’t much of a discount is it…)
  • You get free stabling and feeding of your mounts from Daviren at the Goblin Squash Stables (though if you require a new mount at anytime, he is unable to offer a discount on that)

Thistletop (part 1)
1st of Lamashan, 4707 AR

Moonday, 1st of Lamashan, 4707 AR
The group spent the night at the Rusty Dragon Inn after a night of socializing. Edd decided to eat a wooden chess piece, which made everyone again considered if he was fit to fight against the Thistletop goblins.

In the morning, Ameiko, haven’t not fully recovered, gave the group free breakfast that was bland and boring to say the least. Quinn mimed to her that she would like to use the kitchen, and after getting permission, she cooked a health full breakfast for all the people that were in the Inn.

Abas, a local of Sandpoint, decided to approach the group and ask to join them on their adventures. Wary of if this man could be an asset or a liability, the group ultimately decided to let him join their party. Shalelu was also recruited to help out at Thistletop.

Deciding to approach by foot, the Heroes of Sandpoint headed towards Thistletop, with Shalelu leading the way. More than half a day is spent traveling on the road and through the Nettlewood forest. The only issues faced were a lonely dire rat and some poisonous bushes that the group managed to avoid.

The group was able to easily find a goblin trail leading through the forest and decided it would be best to follow it and see where it led. Abas, having brought his donkey and cart, and his canine companion, decided it might be best to have them wait near the forest entrance, rather than slow the group down why squeezing his cart through the trails.

The group eventually comes to a clearing surrounded by briars and thistles that are even thicker here than the rest of the forest. Magic is detected, and half the group heads east to look for a way through. The other half find a hidden door to some tunnels running through the wall of thistles.

Following the tunnels, the half of the group found a large hole in the ground. The other half of the group, eventually reaching the cliff side, headed back and rejoined them around the hole. Seeing something shiny at the bottom of this hole, Edd decided to jump down and cast feather fall on himself. AT the bottom he finds a cave partially submerged in water. What he didn’t expect was to find a creature in the cave. The creature, a disturbing combination of shark and seal with brown fur and a wide mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth, attacks Edd as soon as he sees him.

With the help of some of his companions (who took a lot of damage falling from the rope they were using), they managed to defeat the creature. After spending some time searching a pile of bones, they find some nifty treasure and climb back up to the rest of the group.

Moving on through the thistles, they find four goblin dogs tied to pegs. The dogs try to attack but are unable to reach the group. The group, seeing that they dogs clearly want to rip out their throats, decides to kill them. The noise of the goblin dogs awakens a firepelt cougar sleeping nearby. The feline proves to be nothing more than an annoyance and the group finished him off quickly. After raising the cougar as a zombie, the group splits once again, this time to the north and south.

The group that headed south finds the source of the magic they detected earlier – a goblin druid. The other group finds a rope bridge, and while Edd is able to cross without any problems, the goblin druid uses magic to block the bridge for the others.

Edd continues on into the building atop Thistletop, not realizing that the rest of this group has been held back from following. Those at the rope bridge work away at the thistles and clear a way through before continuing across.

The heroes that found the druid begin a tough battle with him. At one point, the druid easily passes into the thistles and briars, hiding from the heroes in his den. As they leave, he jumps out again to attack. Realizing he isn’t going to win the battle, he attempts to sink into the thistles again, but is hit by Shalelu’s lucky arrow.

Meanwhile, the other group reforms and finds Edd who has managed to stay alive by himself. The explore and manage to not get into any trouble, though Quinn has a close call after opening a door to the throne room where she finds a bunch of goblins.

When the other half of the group rejoins them, they break open a door and find a goblin tied up in a room with some food stuffs, obviously thrown in here in a hurry. When questioned, this goblin turns out to be a paladin of Sarenrae that was traveling to visit Father Zantus in Sandpoint, but was captured by the local goblins and taken to Thistletop. The Heroes of Sandpoint decide to help him out, trusting that he is good, even though he is a goblin.

Quinn, having not been present when the group found the goblin paladin, decided to lure the goblins in the throne room out (or something) by banging on a door and waiting for them to come to her. The noise alerted the rest of her party, who went to another door to see what was happening. Quinn’s plan was a partial success. The goblins inside prepared for an attack instead, as it was unusual for goblins or other welcomed guests to knock on the doors. They were distracted however for when the rest of the group started attacking.

If you are reading this, send me a message on Skype saying “Goblins chew and goblins bite” and you might get something special. [This has now expired.]

Although he was without his armor and weapons, the goblin paladin, a goblin named Padfoot, joined in on the fight and helped the Heroes of Sandpoint to take down the Goblin Warchief and his buddies.

Clearly not finished with Thistletop, part of the group stays on the main level to fight some goblin dogs and rescue a beautiful horse, and another part heads down the stairs. Jade descends to the second level very quietly, sneaking as he does… but then proceeds to shout out “Hello,” inviting a bugbear and some female goblins out to play. You have to wonder… Why sneak in the first place?

Jade is joined by others to fend off the bugbear, and in the grueling battle, Edd is knocked unconscious. Though it would make more sense to knock out the rest of his attackers, the bugbear decides to instead finish Edd with a coup de grace, effectively smashing him into the concrete floor, forcing Edd to forever be one with Thistletop. The others manage to destroy the bugbear before he can kill any more of their group.

On the surface level, Padfoot notices that the horse they found has been abused and appears to be hungry. He finds some pickles and wheat that he feeds to the horse, effectively calming the beast. Imagine that, a goblin helping a horse.

After the Death of Edd, and a tough day of fighting, the Heroes and their new companion decide to rest for the evening. Bodies are gathered up and set afire in the open courtyard, and the group locks the doors to the throne room to set up camp.

Will the Heroes make it through Thistletop without losing anyone else? What will they find in the lower levels of the strange island? One thing is for sure; if they want to survive, they’ll need to stick together.

Trouble on the Seas
28th of Rova - 30th of Rova, 4707 AR

Fireday, 28th of Rova, 4707 AR
The Heroes of Sandpoint, after clearing out the Glassworks, spend most of the day in town. As evening approached, Dargen was approached by Belven Valdemar at the Sandpoint Shipyard. He gatthed the rest of the Heroes and returned with them to Belven. Having heard of their recent adventures, Belven asked for help with a harpy living on The Three Cormorants that has been terrorizing some of the ships coming into port.

After negotiating (some would call it extortion!) a fee of 150 gp and upgrades to their boat being built, the group journeyed out towards Shank’s Wood. The pine and eucalyptus filled forest is mostly quiet, save for a couple Ghouls they ran into who were eating a dead goblin. After defeating their undead foes, they find a chest of treasures belonging to the dead goblin. Forcing their zombie companion to carry the heavy treasure, they continued on towards The Three Cormorants.

By nightfall, the group has reached the shore. Deciding that the waters could be too dangerous to traverse at night, they make camp. Most of the night passed without incident until the third watch of the night. A mite traveled near their camp, but after a short chat, he left… only to have gathered friends and returned to rob the group. Little did the mites know that this group were the Heroes of Sandpoint. The mites were quickly killed.

Starday, 29th of Rova, 4707 AR
In the morning, the group broke camp, though some of the group were fatigued due to sleeping in their armor. A quick dip in the ocean brought them to the first island where they found a campsite. Without checking to see what was inside the tent, one of the group decided to light a tent on fire, killing the two goblins inside. Four more goblins emerged from the tents and attempted to best the group, but sadly, they were unable to do so and were quickly killed by the Heroes.

A short journey and swim to the second island lead to group to a couple of crow-like creatures that proved to be ferocious. Sustaining only minor injuries, the crows were killed, and the Heroes were disappointed to find no treasure. Continuing on, they reached the water’s edge again and quickly swam across to the third island.

The group was required to traverse the entire island before encountering the harpy foe. The feral woman creature flew up into the air and began to sing a captivating song. Sadly, for her, the group was able to knock her out of the sky and kill her before she could cause any harm. Our heroes are surely getting strong!

The group returns to their original campgrounds from the evening before and the night passes uneventfully.

Sunday, 30th of Rova, 4707 AR
The Heroes of Sandpoint awaken well rested and returns to Sandpoint. They’re greated with some glares and disappointed looks, and feeling a little guilt for extorting one of the townsfolk, the group donats money to the town, regaining favor with the townsfolk.

Glass and Wrath
27th of Rova, 4707 AR

Oathday, 27th of Rova, 4707 AR
After speaking with Bethana Corwin, the Sandpoint Heroes head over to the Sandpoint Glassworks to search for Ameiko. When the group arrives at the Glassworks, they find the building curiously silent, even with the black smoke spewing from the chimney. After speaking with the neighbor, a female tending to the lawn of the monetary, the group began peaking through windows (all of which were curtained, though high-pitched giggles and glass breaking could be heard through some) and attempting to break down doors. After an awkward moment with some townsfolk wondering why they were breaking into the business, the group entered the building from two different entrances.

After taking a look through a door, half of the party decided to leave quietly to go find the rest of the party. Neglecting to inform the other members of the goblin threat in that room, the group explored the other sections of the building before confronting the enemies within a room with large furnaces. They quickly killed the goblins, even throwing one into a furnace, then proceeded to the basement.

In the basement, they find Tsuto Kaijitsu when they open a door and are attacked by the half-elf. He is knocked unconscious, tied up, then revived with a potion for interrogation, but the group learns more from his journal that the half-elf. It seems that many of the goblins are being led by a woman that was thought to be dead; the daughter of the Father who died in the Sandpoint fire five years ago. She was responsible for the theft of the Father’s bones, which she sacrificed at Thistletop.

Ameiko is found in a room adjacent to where Tsuto was found, and when she learns of her father’s cruel death at the hands of her half-brother, she becomes stoic and returns to her inn.

Before departing, Ameiko requested that the Heroes of Sandpoint clear out any other goblins or enemies if they could for her. The journal mentions called a quasit living somewhere underground, and a tunnel leading from the basement of the Glassworks to some mysterious catacombs leads to armed combat with wrathspawns, a deformed goblin, and a flying quasit and her minions.

At one point, Edd, having the sudden urge to drink from a concavity of an alter filled with what appeared to be water, sustained injury to his mind and body, causing him to go a little more mad then his usual self. After the defeat of the quasit, Edd threw her body into a pool of translucent lava-looking fluid, causing more wrathspawns to appear. Thankfully, the group was able to destroy the creatures. The group attempted to understand the pool of liquid, but was unable to gain much information. Edd then donned the silk dress and tiara belonging to the quasit and the Sandpoint Heroes returned to town through a secondary entrance to the catacombs.

Father Zantus was recruited to help decipher the pool of lava, Ameiko granted the party with free room and board at the Rusty Dragon for the rest of their lives, and notes were left from Krolmite and Nibs of their departure from town. Nibs shared a riddle with the group which was easily solved, and Nibs donated her recently commissioned boat to the group of heroes.

Local Heroes
25th-27th of Rova, 4707 AR

Toilday, 25th of Rova, 4707 AR

Three days after the raid at the festival, Sandpoint is mostly recovered. The dead have been buried, the cathedral concecrated, and the attacks are mostly remembered with chuckles and memeories of goblins lighting themselves on fire, getting stepped on by horses, or drowning in half-full rain barrels.

The Heroes of Sandpoint are the talk of town, and each of the heroes receives gifts from the town, free meals, and free rooms at the Rusty Dragon Inn. The local baker presses a fresh-baked loaf of bread into the arms of the skinniest hero, worried that he is starving, and Savah’s Armory gives a 20% discount to the heroies.

During the day, Krolmite is approached by a young woman, Shayliss Vinder, the daughter of Ven Vinder. She lures him to the General Store’s basement to slay rats, but her true intentions were to sudduce him. Krolmite thought the situation odd, but decided to bed the beautiful woman anyways. Before much could be accomplished, Ven Vinder interrupts, screaming and roaring in rage. The charismatic gnome manages to talk his way out of the situation, succeeding in not ruining either relationship.

A short time later, town guards search out the heroes and request that they go to the Garrison to meet with Sheriff Belor Hemlock. He requests that the group look into a problem at the cathedral because he has other tasks to attend to. As it turns out, Father Zantus recently discovered the late Father Tobyn’s tomb door ajar. When the group investigates, they are forced to fight with animated human skeletons. One of the heroes comes to find that sundering the head of an undead skeleton does not slow it down very much.

After the defeat of the undead, the group learns that Father Tobyn’s remains are missing. Father Zantus suggests that perhaps that is what the raid was really about.

Upon returning to the Rusty Dragon Inn, the group seeks out Aldern Foxglove, interested to see why he wanted to chat with them after the group saved his life. He invites them on a boar hunt and purchases a mount for each of the heroes. At the Goblin Squash Stables, the group meets Daviren Hosk, who offers 5gp for each set of goblin ears returned to him.

Aldern leads the heroes across Tanner’s Bridge and to the Tickwood forest where he lets the Sandpoint heroes take down a boar and a dire bat that attacks Aldern.

Back in town, Ameiko cooks up the boar and serves it to the group. Before having a chance to enjoy the meal, a surly, elderly man slams the tavern’s door open and bellows a command in a strange language. He insults the towns new heroes and then argues in the strange language with Ameiko. This man turns out to be Lonjiku Kaijitsu. He tries to grab her by the hair at one point, but she dodges and hits him with a soupy ladle. He curses in Common that she’s as dead to him as her mother and leaves. Ameiko, clearly upset, makes a joke about serving jackass stew while removing a hair from the ladle, and returns to the kitchen to clean and continue cooking. The Sandpoint Heroes retire to bed for the nigiht shortly after this.

Wealday, 26th of Rova, 4707 AR

The following day while eaching breakfast, a woman, carrying an infant and clutching the hand of a boy, approaches the group. She is Amele Barett and she tells the group that what she and her husband, Alergast, though was night terrors was really their son, Aeren, seeing a goblin emerge from his closet each nice since the Festival. After hearing an alarming cry of pain from their dog, Petals, Alergast rushed in to Aeren’s room to find a goblin biting his arm. She leads the group to her home and rushes off to find the Sheriff.

Sadly, when the group arrives at the bedroom, they pull out Alergast’s half eaten body from the closet and are attacked by a crazed goblin. They quickly kill the creature and leave the house tofind Amele arrive back at the house with the Sheriff. They inform her that her husband has died and she has a fill breakdown. The Sheriff tells the group he will handle everything from here and the group leaves.

A few hours later, the Sheriff tracks the heroes down and has them join him at the town hall. They meet with him, Mayor Deverin, and Shalelu Andosana. Shalelu is somewhat of an unofficial member of the guard. She patrols much of the surrounding area and helps keep the goblins population under control. She visits now to report a raid that occurred south of Mosswood.

She finds out that the local goblins tribes are working together, an unusual occurrence among the goblin tribes of the area. The Sheriff announces that he will be traveling to Magnimar to request more soldiers in Sandpoint, and asks that the group stay in town to reassure the townsfolk.

Throughout the rest of the day, Shalelu informs the town heroes about the 5 goblin tribes and the goblins currently looked at as heroes among their kind.

Goblin Tribes:

  • Birdcruncher goblins, who live in caves along the western edge of the Devil’s Platter, although traditionally these goblins are the least aggressive of the five
  • The Licktoad goblins of the Brinestump Marsh to the south, pests who are excellent swimmers
  • The Seven Tooth goblins of Shank’s Wood in the East, goblins who’ve secured a place for themselves by raiding Sandpoint’s junkyard and rebuilding the stolen refuse into armor and weapons
  • The Mosswood goblins are further East and likely the largest tribe but one traditionally held back by feuding families within their own ranks
  • The Thistletop goblins who live on the Nettlewood coast atop a small island that some say holds a passing resemblance to a decapitated head

Goblins “Heroes”

  • Big Gugmut is an unusually muscular and tall goblin from Mosswood who, it is said, had a hobgoblin for a mother and a wild boar for a father.
  • Koruvus was a champion of the Seven Tooth tribe, as well known for his short temper as he was for his prized possession – a magic longsword sized for a human that the goblin stubbornly kept as his own (despite the fact that it was too large for him to properly wield). Koruvus vanished several months ago after he supposedly discovered a “secret hideout” in a cave along the cliffs, but the Seven Tooth goblins remain convinced he’s out there still, a ghost or worse, waiting to murder any goblin who tries to discover his hideout.
  • Vorka is a notorious goblin cannibal who lives in the Brine stump marsh, a “hero” mostly to goblins other than the Licktoad tribe.
  • Rendwattle Gutwad is the obese chieftain of the Brinestump goblins, a corpulent monster who, it is said, never leaves his throne.
*Ripnugget is the leader of the Thistletop goblins and controls what the five tribes agree is the best lair.
  • Bruthazmus, an infamous bugbear ranger who lives in northern Nettlewood and often visits the five tribes to trade things he’s stolen from caravans for alcohol, news, or magic arrows. He has a particular hatred of elves, and we have fought on several occasions. To date, neither of us has managed to get the upper hand on the other, but will not be the first to fall in our private war.

Oathday, 27th of Rova, 4707 AR

The next morning, the heroes awake and head to breakfast, but their plans are interrupted by Bethana Corwin, a maid that has worked for Ameiko for a while. She is upset because she hasn’t seen Ameiko today and she is usually up very early. Her room was empty and Bethana found a note from Ameiko’s half-brother, Tsuto. Because he is a half-elf, Tsuto was disowned by the Kaijitsu family at Lonjiku’s urging. Bethany has a bad feeling and is worried that he is up to no good. Since the Sheriff is out of town, she asks the group of heroes to find out what happened.
